Functional Movement Testing
Today at the top chiropractor in Franklin I want to discuss today how functional movement screenings can help in aid in an assessment of a patient. So we do a bit of this at the top chiropractor in Franklin at Healthworks chiropractic. You know we’re looking at a client or a potential athlete somebody that’s very very active you know the athlete or client you know should have successfully completed the thorough examination before we go about doing the type of movement testing a history questionnaire before the movement assessment is very beneficial. Clothing is very beneficial as well. The clothing should not inhibit movements and if possible the client should be wearing ideally some form fitting clothing to observe movements and movements that may be compromised or shoes that can be done with the athlete in a comfortable position. You know their prescription orthotics kits recommend that they be worn a warm up although it’s not necessary to have a quiet warm up before a screening. You know several minutes of movement to feel more comfortable. OK. And you know since there’s no additional weight added to a general movement screen assessment it’s it’s basically designed to uncover limitations of movement and extensive warm up wouldn’t be required at all. Cueing the movements it’s recommended that you use these little Kealing as possible so you can see the person’s natural movement. That’s what we like to do at the top chiropractor in Franklin at Healthworks chiropractic. We like to see the patients movement in kind of what they’re feeling.
So one of the tools that she may need for a functional movement screening is you know you want to utilize minimal equipment like you were saying and with very little expense being invested into testing these individuals in a functional movement screen. It’s going to place the body into positions that will challenge fundamental movements and they’re going to detect the body’s own compensatory movement patterns. And it’s going to be very very apparent when you see these to show the individuals weakness during the movement it’s going to be little focused during the testing but certain equipment is needed to provide this. As a parent you know the body relative to testing and reliability between testers the equipment is going to be extremely light and expensive. So you can use a you know like a dowel rod to check for something like a deep squatter a lunge herbal step or an active street leg raise the dog is going to be the Dow is going to be used to test for reliability and make the test a little more suitable for people and how they score these functional movement test is basically like a deep squat hurdle step and in line lunge the shoulder mobility rotational stability trunk stability with a push up and active straight leg raise. And basically the scoring of a functional movement testing consists of four possibilities and the scores range from zero to about three three being the best possible score and for basic scores are quite simple in philosophy. Individual is going to be tested and if there is a if there’s pain during the movement a score of zero is given in the painful areas is actually going to be noted. That’s where we kind of know if there’s there’s an injury or something more that we need to look at at the top chiropractor in Franklin at Healthworks chiropractic.
We want to make sure that the root cause of the dysfunction and maybe we can adjust that area takes specific x rays for that area kind of clearing that area of all injuries or potential injuries that could happen. And a score of two is given if the person is able to complete the move it must combate say in some way to perform the fundamental movement. And a score of three is given if the person performs correctly without any compensation. And that’s kind of how they score a functional movement test. You know the deep Squat Squat. It’s a movement that everybody does in their everyday life you know. And in the ready position for a lot of athletes it’s required for a lot of powerful movements in the lower extremities the deep squat it’s going to be a test that challenges the total body mechanics when performed properly. So a squat is used to assess bilateral symmetrical and functional mobility in the hips the knees and the ankles basically an overhead assessment with a down Rod can assess bilateral symmetrical mobility of a shoulders as well as thoracic spine.
So if you have an individual let’s say we’re at the top chiropractor in Franklin and we’re assuming they’re starting the position by placing his or her feet about shoulder with a part with the feet aligned in a Saj role playing an individual then adjust their hands on the Dow to assume about a 90 degree angle of elbows with the Dow overhead and then the Dow is going to be press overhead and slowly into a sedate or squat position and basically the squat position should be assumed with the heels on the floor head and chest are going to be facing forward. And the Dow is going to be maximally pressed head and the individual is going to repeat the movement about three times. And if the criteria for this score it’s not achieved then the person is going to be asked to reform the test. You know to try to buy sex with a board underneath their heels. And if you have any doubts when your testing score is lower and you’re going to try to interpret the score while testing. Make sure if you have a question to view the individual from a lateral or the side I guess I should say. And we like to do this in certain cases if we’re dealing with an athlete at the top chiropractor in Franklin and Healthworks chiropractics to see if there is a dysfunction within the body you know if if there’s a clinical reasoning for the squat test it’s the ability to form a deep squat. That requires a close kinetic chain that have Dawsey flexion and ankles inflection of the knees and the hips as well. You’re going to get a bit of extension in the Voracek spine and you’re going to get flexion of the abduction as flexion and a little bit of abduction of the shoulders and you’re going to see that poor performance so this task can be a result of several factors and that’s going to be limited mobility in the thoracic spine and it’s going to be attributed to poor shoulder and thoracic mobility. And a lot of limited mobility and the lower extremities including poor closed kinetic chain Dawsey flexion ankles or poor flexion the hips is going to provide a negative testing for this deep squat.
So we want to make sure that you know there’s corrective exercises that can help. And some stretches are not necessary you could do a little bit of self stretching like a wall set with a shoulder press Dawsey flexion like you’re closing the door you know stopping a door from closing stretching out the gastric knee is one of them. Partner stretch you could do prone quads stretch. You know there’s a lot of exercise can do to help this test and we can show you those at a top chiropractor in Franklin you know a lateral drill going to the side laterally deep squatting overhead standing chop or lifts to the side.
