Stiffness And Tightness In The Neck | Healthworks Chiropractic | Exercising With Neck Pain
Deafness and tightness in the neck can be a serious plague to anybody who likes to stay active. Anybody who’s a frequent exerciser talked today about some things that we do here at Health Works chiropractic and what you can do on your own as well as what we can kind of guide you on a Healthworks chiropractic if you like to stay active when you’re getting this stiffness and tightness in the neck from doing certain movements throughout the day. And you really want to find the root cause of it. So you know you’ve got to look at the movement patterns and some of the exercises that you may be doing that may be causing the stiffness and tightness in the neck. And sometimes people find that when they’re doing any type of pressing movement or overhead movement must take for example like out like a overhead press or shoulder press there inadvertently kind of shrugging their shoulders up which which creates a lot of tension in their traps. And when we create this tension in our traps we’re going to get that stiffness and tightness in the neck you know. So that’s why it’s very important to pack the shoulder kind of bringing the scapula or the shoulder blade kind of back and rotated inward towards the pocket. So when we do this we stabilize the shoulder the shoulders a very unstable joint. It’s there for stability but you know there’s a lot of a lot of structure around it that that can go away and we do so many movements that involve the shoulders in the neck the shoulders and the neck.
They worked very closely together especially when exercising typically you’re not just going to hit isolate one muscle group. So that’s a quite a common misconception especially with rotator cuff injuries for rotator cuff muscles. You know we somewhat have come to believe that we can isolate each one of these and we can isolate certain areas but we’re not always isolating one specific muscle. So you know things like the sub occipital muscles in the back portion of the skull these can often get tight with exercises like squats and deadlifts. Bench press the overhead press in the Olympic list smashing cleans just because if our heads are kind of jutted out forward we’re going to put a lot of attention on these areas and that’s going to create some stiffness and tightness in the neck. Some noticeable will strain these areas as well if they’re looking over their shoulder real fast or real strenuous activity and it can be very debilitating. Take you out of what you love to do crunches are another one that they’re not necessarily bad form just maybe suffering. And if you put too much strain on the neck you may have seen this illustrates the different things especially if you exercise pulling the head forward and then crunching. So there are some alternatives to these. One of my favorite ones Persley is a stability ball crunch where you hold the neck in a neutral angle and then you can crunch for just very slightly a little bit of flexion in the mid portion of the spine the thoracic portion. So that’s also better for your lower back in terms of just lying flat on the ground.
So it adds that full range of motion to that exercise is a little bit more easier on your back and in terms could potentially be a better exercise for you. You know we we look at all the root causes and if you’re getting some pain or headaches while you’re lifting any type of movement while you’re lifting your arms over your head or out to the side and you get headaches or stiffness and tightness in the neck.
