Today we’re going to talk about backpack safety tips. I got the question all the time about kids and back pain and neck pain and headaches and what can we do to help our son or daughter not have to go through these problems. Backpack Safety Tips. And one of the things that we always talk about is how heavy is their backpack and how is this heavy backpack affecting young children. Matter of fact we’re seeing more and more kids at younger ages coming in with problems related to postural issues and backpack issues. As technology continues to churn kids are more and more spending time at a computer on a cell phone on an iPad. And of course, taking heavy books in their backpack and this new backpack trend among children isn’t surprising when you consider the disproportionate amount of weight they carry in their backpacks often slung over just one shoulder. According to a study conducted recently in Italy, they found that the average child carries a backpack that would be the equivalent of a thirty-nine-pound burden for a 176-pound man or a 29 £29 load for a 132-pound woman of those children carrying heavy backpacks at school. Sixty percent had experienced back pain as a result.
According to the preliminary results of some other studies conducted shows that the longer a child wears a backpack the longer it takes for a curvature or deformity of the spine to correct itself. And so the results of these types of studies are especially important as more and more school districts in many of these in urban areas remove lockers from the premises forcing students to carry their books with them all day long. The problem has become so widespread in fact that some states have passed legislation that would force school districts to develop ways of reducing the weight of students backpacks Franklin chiropractor believes that limiting the weight of the backpack nor more than 10 percent of a child’s body weight and urging the use of ergonomically incorrect backpacks are possible solutions. The next tip that I’d like to give is that the backpack should never hang more than four inches below the waist line. A backpack that hangs too low. Increases the weight on the shoulders again causing your child to lean forward when walking next try to find a backpack with individualized compartments. This helps in position in the content more effectively. Make sure that the pointy or bulky objects are packed away from the area that will rest on your child’s back. The next tip is that when it comes to backpacks. Bigger is definitely not necessarily better. The more room there is in a backpack the more your child will carry and the heavier the backpack will be and the more stress will be put on the shoulders and the spine. It may be wise to talk to your child’s teacher. Ask your child if he could leave the heaviest books at school and bring home only in lighter handout materials or workbooks and all of the use of roller packs or backpacks on wheels if you will has become popular in recent years. However this is not a trend that has fully taken over. So we still have to look at what we can do to help your child with lugging that heavy backpack.

The backpack should never hang more than four inches below the waist line and a backpack with individualized compartments helps in position and the contents most effectively. Bigger is not better when it comes to backpacks because you can essentially put more stuff in there. Urge your child to wear both shoulder straps. Don’t let them wear the strap on one shoulder only and also don’t let them lug the backpack around by one strap. They should be wearing the backpack with both straps on both shoulders. We also recommend wide padded straps the shoulder straps should be adjustable so the backpack can be fitted to your child’s body and the backpack is still too heavy. We do recommend again that you talk to the child’s teacher or administrator in the school to see if there’s a way to get less weight in the backpack. If your child is experiencing discomfort in the neck shoulders mid-back or lower back as well as headaches. Backpack Safety Tips. We do our once exam which stands for orthopedic tests on the neck the upper back the shoulders the lower back as necessary.
We test their nervous system to make sure it’s functioning as close to 100 percent as possible. We do a full chiropractic exam and we’ll take a set of four spine X-rays this whole full spine X-rays will also serve as a scoliosis check for your child. We will bring you back parent and child to go over all the findings from the exam or review the X-rays and we’ll go over a plan of attack not only to help them feel better short term but help them feel better long term as well. Think of your child as a tree growing up if that sapling tree starts out crooked then they’re going to grow up as a crooked tree. The same thing for your child. If there’s a shift in the spine early on that child is going to grow up as an adult to have a more prominent shift in the spine and that’s going to predispose them to more problems as they get older such as disk degeneration and arthritis in their back and their neck. This is all very preventable though with chiropractic care for kids.
